Neat Series' Proto-Manifesto: Messages, Our Medium!

In this moment of awkward confrontation with “the jungle out there”* Neat Series is ready to shape its ideological** program according to the following guidelines:

1 – Embrace the common and the (apparent) repetition of daily routines as the backdrop for the surreal side of everything. We will use, develop and promote a sharp and ironic attention able to detect the details that make each instant, person, object, or word singular, unrepeatable and potentially ridiculous.

2 – Promote a critical awareness that responds to the overflow of information that comes to us. Fighting both silent passivity and intellectual over-criticism, we propose an active and optimistic attitude towards media society, using its tools and resources to promote inter-action and the production of customized contents.

3 – Use artistic strategies as tools of political and social intervention. Art actions and objects (as any other) are always containers of either explicit or implicit messages. We want to gain full consciousness of this potential of meaning, using our artistic projects as catalysts for communication and inter-action to activate a shared and responsive experience of reality.

4 – Work in a dialogical way knowing that artists, as citizens, are inevitably responsive members of a community, and as such should raise pertinent issues and questions and understand/consider the potential impact of actions from a social and political point of view. We believe artistic work shouldn’t always be self-referential: it should echo and be framed by the specific context it is developed in.

5 – Believe that technology, namely when it’s used to produce artistic work, is not an end in itself but a privileged media and should be used to its maximum capacity to support and communicate content and establish dynamics of interaction. We don’t praise but we also don’t demonize technology: we intend to use it, expand its possibilities and propose other ways it can be integrated to promote creativity, interrelations and active citizenship.

* The residency program at ACA was a very comfortable nest for artists, and life outside is nowhere near being that easy. For example, in the outside world, there aren't any Master Artists to provide us with wine for our evening meals. But the big question is: who will put up our signs now that we don’t have Dan?

**Yes, we know: Ideologies are dead. Even Capitalism (
an adjective recent history has proved to be harmless) is dead--that’s why we have no fear in calling our program ideological.

Action: Heart & Soul Piano Ringtones

While working on lots of other projects, Neat Series took the time during the residency to record these two versions of the old piano classic "Heart and Soul." Dedicated to Foley's friend, Erica Brusselars (in Pittsburgh), the tones were recorded by Salpico in ACA's Ruth Scorgie Hubbard Music Studio, and feature Foley's two very naive renditions of the tune.

Backstory: Brusselars has a piano in her dining room and Foley often coaxes guests into playing "Heart and Soul" with her at dinner parties. Brusselars has provided the material inspiration for two of Foley's projects--Hazardous Materials and Men Seeking Women. She totally deserves ringtone payback!

Anagram Poems for Painters and Dancers

One day within our weekday poetry group meeting, Holman asked us to prepare to read to or perform for the painters and dancers in their studios. As a digital media artist, I was a bit befuddled. What was I gonna do? I was curious about the language poets Holman mentioned during one of our sessions, and thought about my interest in "found" content (such as photographs folks attach to personals' ads on Craigslist). I had the feeling that I wanted to make or create something for the other artists, and then I remembered the awesome online anagram generator that a friend told me about a few years earlier. I went for it! I had fun investigating "performing" the pieces for the painters, but I think it worked more interestingly when I got the idea to invite Ines to perform the pieces for the dancers along with me. As we began each dancer anagram poem, we called out/called for each dancer. It worked!

Neat Series' INsideOUT Presentation

Neat Series began our INsideOUT presentation by marching some of our signs onto the theater stage and playing our "You Must Relax" video. Foley then clicked on the first slide of the presentation,

telling the audience that she applied to work within Holman's group as a digital media artist to continue refining the performance of text through video in her "talking artifact" projects. She also spoke to Salpico's desire to use the residency time to refine notions of text as incorporated into her performance work, and noted that both members of Neat Series shared a similar intuitive approach to "performing text through action."

Salpico took over the mic and talked about how we came up with the name for our collaboration via an anagram generator,

and talked about the connection between words (tools of poets and writers) and our work.

Neat Series had two questions at the focus of our creative inquiry within the residency. The first related to the processing of information (or messages).

Salpico spoke about two of our word-based intervention projects:

The second question related to our shared approach as artists to making work with a sensitivity informed through connections with community as collaborators. We wanted to draw attention to the interdepended "ecological" system surrounding our work at ACA.

We viewed the internal and external community as collaborators in our projects and documented their contributions to our actions.

We created new works which were inspired by the work of peer and Master artits, and we created (and attempted to create) experiences which showed our appreciation for them or underscored messages of giving to or sharing with others as part of community.

We played Ben's apple-biting ringtone for the audience.

And we showed a snapshot of the blog to the audience, inviting them to read and see more of our work.

We got some incredible feedback from people attending the event. One person suggested we apply for another residency program within the Alliance of Artist Communities. Associate Artists and ACA staff members told us their funny stories of discovering the signs we installed on the grounds. Another attendee suggested we look for gallery representation through which we may be able to create a special edition of artist designed ringtones. The feedback helped us to feel as though we'd successfully answered the first (and very important question): "What the hell are two conceptual artists doing in the poets' group?"

Action: Requested "Wind" Ringtones for Sara Wolfe

Associate Artist Sara Wolfe approached us during the last week with a subtle ringtone request--"the sound of wind." We brought Sara into the Ruth Scorgie Hubbard Music Studio to collaborate with us (we had her perform the first audio track for the tone). Neat Series produced two versions of the ringtone because we thought Sara's simple version might be even more interesting with a little hi-pitched blustery noises added to it. You can download the wind ringtones for Sara here.

Action: You Must Relax ("Talking Artifact" Video)

Last fall, when the poet Jill Battson told T. Foley that Bob Holman, producer of the PBS series The United States of Poetry was going to lead a residency program for Associate Artists at ACA, Foley quickly got her application materials together and sent them in. Having worked on a series of videos called "talking artifacts" for the last couple of years, and having recently completed a poetry video commission for Pittsburgh's City of Asylum, Foley thought she might find spoken word artists to collaborate with at ACA. The "talking artifact" approach to making videos renders picture subservient to audio--Foley painstakingly edits the video track so that individual still frames appears on screen for the length of time it takes a person to iterate one syllable of speech.

Here's what the edits look like in Final Cut Pro's timeline window:

"You Must Relax" is a Neat Series collaboration that was screened at the INsideOUT event. For the audio track, Foley and Salpico continued their game of rearranging found text (the book was discovered in a pile of discarded materials sitting on the counter in the painting studio), and Foley shot original footage on ACA's campus and at New Smyrna Beach.
