Action: You've Got Mail

While walking and riding bikes around the area, we discovered that many residents of New Smyrna Beach install mailboxes with distinctly personal decorative touches. Some are hand painted with beach scenes, or are decorated with flag paintings or nesting birds; others are replicas of log cabins. The most elaborate ones are 5 foot tall sandstone manatees , or nearly life-sized skeleton-on-motorbike mailboxes. Neat Series loved these do-it-yourself art pieces and thought that installing one on the campus would pay tribute to the local custom and be a fun way for us to communicate our "actions" to our fellow artists. So we mentioned the idea to ACA's facility manager, Dan Stillwagon. He immediately said, "I've got an extra mailbox at home. It's decorated with ducks. It was given to my wife by somebody in her family. I can bring it in tomorrow." He brought it in and asked us where we wanted it installed.

It went in the ground on Thursday morning the 26th of February. The only person who remarked that it had appeared was Chef Tom Kurtzhals--he parks his van near it, and can see it from the Whatmore Commons kitchen windows.
